I have now been in Salt Lake City for four weeks and it's just come in the last few days, but I finally feel fully settled in. I no longer have those thoughts of 'what the hell am I doing' or moments when I miss home, Swansea and everything I've been used to. I'm now feeling very content and enjoying everyday. Maybe it's because the work has started to kick in, I had to write a paper this weekend, or because I feel like there's a routine now but I really feel part of the community and not a English Outsider any more.
When I go to my classes now, I have friends to sit by and share ideas with, my professors know me, and I've started the process of planning my travels around the states during my time here. With Anna, a girl who came to Swansea last semester from the U, we are planning on travelling to Colorado for Fall Break and Thanksgiving with her family in San Francisco. We even excitedly discussed Las Vegas for our birthdays! I love my flatmates and I'm lucky that we all get along well. They've been kind enough to introduce me to their friends and I've been able to be included in a great group. Whatever it is that has made me feel so settled, I now feel that the sense of being in no-mans land has gone and I feel part of a great community here at the U. However, I've been sure not to forget Britain too quickly! I've found a new found passions in watching all the British TV shows such as the Bake-Off and Made In Chelsea, I even watched a BBC edition of The Inspector Calls last night to relive my GCSE days! I've been able to find a way to watch BBC iplayer and 40d here in America and where before Adverts were a pest, here I could watch them all day! There's something so comforting watching British scenes and accents! My flatmate couldn't even understand Bake Off fully as they were so British! My Mum and Dad were also kind enough to send me a care package from back home filled with Maltesers and Curry Sauce Packets, who knew I would miss curry so much! I've also been skyping my family every week (of course) and my best friends from Swansea. It was amazing to all be able to talk to each other again, even though I was in Utah, Charlotte was in England and Leonie in The Netherlands!! I'm looking forward to what the next few months hold and will be sure to update this blog on what I find!
