After months of thinking about it, in a little over two weeks time I'll be on a plane heading towards Sydney, Australia! The thought is exciting but also a little terrifying, I'll be leaving my family, friends, a job I enjoy and the UK once again to travel, this time with no set goal and no back-up. It will be the biggest adventure of my life so far, and I think it will challenge me more than other trips previously have. In the US I struggled with homesickness and belonging, but in Australia I'm going with no return date in mind and no institute and set schedule to adhere to. It's complete freedom which is so exhilarating but I think will take a bit of time to get used to. This trip will just be me and I've chosen to travel solo because I wanted to experience a way of travel where I don't have to compromise. Although I love travelling with friends, I wanted to see if I find the experience better if I'm able to do what I want to do majority of the time. I will have a friend coming out to on a similar path to me a few months later, but I chose not to solely travel with her because I knew, ultimately one of us would end up not doing what they wanted to do. Going by myself means I can make the choices every time. Whilst this also means I'm responsible for the mistakes made, at least I'll only be angry at myself and not at someone else. It's going to be a challenge but going solo will mean I have to make an effort to engage with others the whole time and I hope it means I'll be more sociable and have more friends. Fingers crossed! I don't yet have a solid plan, and I've loved seeing people faces when I tell them I'm going by myself, with no job, no accommodation and no family out there. My rough plan is to stay in Sydney for the summer months, find a job, find accommodation and experience city life in Sydney. After that, I'd like to travel up the coast, maybe over to WA and generally just travel and enjoy. If I need more money, I'd look for a job in Brisbane or the Gold Coast. I'm keeping it open though, I don't yet know who i'll meet and therefore what opportunities may come my way. For the first week in Sydney, I've chosen to go on a week long introduction tour with Ultimate OZ. I think it'll be a good way to meet people, ease mine and my parents nerves and will allow me to see loads in the first week. I'm really excited about this week and have already been in contact with others who will be on the tour with me. It was a tad pricey at £500 but I think it'll be worth it. Final preparations and packing are getting into place, I'm constantly worried that I've forgotten that I need to do something and won't be ready in time but think I'm getting there. The next couple of weeks will mean leaving work, starting to pack, spending time with family and friends and getting myself mentally ready for a brand new adventure. I'm excited for what the next few months will bring and can't wait to share it all on here!
