After a drink-fuelled first week in Australia which resulted in new friends, new experiences and the excitement of what was to come, a few of us decided to sign up to Surf Camp. Surf Camp was a 5 day long intensive week by the beach with 2 surf lessons a day where we would learn everything we needed to become the ultimate frother. It was a 2 hour bus journey south of Sydney to Gerroa, a small town on a hill overlooking the beautiful 7 mile beach. Our camp was in a holiday park on the edge of the town and had access to the beach as well as a pool. Luckily for us the weather was amazing overall for the time we were there and I managed to get a great tan on my hands, feet and face. The rest of me is looking significantly whiter due to us wearing a wetsuit in the water! Over the course of five days my surfing improved and I was standing up on every wave. It was as hard as I thought it would be, but our instructors were amazing at explaining how to stand to how to turn as well as keeping the classes light and fun. The waves at 7 mile beach were great for beginners and meant I could ride green waves, one of the best feelings! I would love to surf again at some point, it's a great sport which gives me an excuse to spend more time in the water. Over the days we saw dolphins and whales moving south for migration season which was amazing and no sharks, phew! Our camp group was a large one and we were therefore split into two class groups. This meant we alternated between getting up early and late and eating earlier or later. We got down time in the day as well and used this to sunbathe and relax in the hammocks. Evenings were spent on the beach or in the camp drinking a few and socialising with everyone. It was such a fun week and I was so glad that I decided to do it. Now that we're back in Sydney the holiday is over for now and the real work begins. I've been looking for work this week with modest success and also moved into an apartment which we'll be staying in for the next four months. My first two weeks here in Australia were fantastic and not only let me travel a bit up and down the NSW coast but also gave me a great Aussie experience. I'm already in love with this country and can't wait for what the next few weeks will bring, let alone the first few months!
