In January I started a new job at St George Openair Cinema. I would be working on the bar with a view from Mrs Macquairies Point of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. I started here as I was told my retail job, with the nature of the store as pop-up would be closing in the middle of January. Around Christmas I was informed we would instead be going onto the 29th Febuary. This was later moved prematurely to the 23rd January. I therefore accepted staying at Short Story as well as working at the bar at the Open Air Cinema. Luckily for me, this worked out perfectly.
Short Story has been a lot quieter since Christmas and most shifts are long with little to do and no one to talk to. The days haven't been arduous but have been slow and therefore the change in pace to a busy bar as been great! From running a store by myself in the day to working as a team during a fast and busy serving time, the two jobs are very different and have offered me variety. The bar job has also proved difficult to ensure multiple shifts, so working at Short Story also guaranteed me 5 to 6 days working a week and enough money to pay for rent and living costs as well as continuing to save up for the East Coast. January time seems to be a slower time of year in Sydney and many of us have faced less shifts and shorter hours which means I've been grateful for the shifts I have been getting. This week was my last at Short Story and we finally packed up the store. It was bittersweet and I'll miss the time spent with my colleagues but the long and quiet days were starting to get hard to work and therefore not enjoyable anymore. I have been offered more shifts at the OpenAir Cinema and from this week will be working as ground staff as well as bar staff. I"m a little nervous as its another role and new people but it sounds like a role with a lot of variety and longer shifts so can't complain! I did have a week where I was worried I wouldn't be making enough to pay for living costs and would have to dip into my savings but luckily things turned around. Working two roles, one a day job and another an evening job was really fun and added a lot of variety into my week. I'm glad that I have had the opportunity to work a variety of roles in Australia so far and meet a lot of different people. My new job has a lot of Aussies in the workforce which is great for me as it means I have the opportunity to meet more locals. We'll be living and working in Sydney for only four more weeks and the time has gone by so fast! I hope to work hard at the cinema and take every shift offfered so when the East Coats comes I'll have no money worries and enough to keep me going in Darwin and beyond! I'm excited to get out the city and start travelling again, it's going to be a very different change in lifestyle but I'm ready to pick up my rucksack and start the hostel life again. I think I will miss the home comforts that I've had in Sydney but also feel like I've had a lot of time here and I'm ready to travel and see what else Australia has to offer. Until then, I'll keep working hard so I can travel for as long as possible!!
